The Man Who Sold Himself is the third album from the collaboration between Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison and 05Ric, the multi-instrumentalist, singer songwriter . The album will be released on Kscope on February 27th 2012 as a 2 disc set which, alongside the stereo mix of the album on CD, features a 5.1 mix on DVD, allowing fans to enjoy the intricate complexities of the album in full surround glory. In addition to being voted Best Progressive Drummer four years in a row in the Modern Drummer Magazine’s readers poll. He was also recently invited to perform on the David Letterman show as part of his Drum Solo week.

Best known for his work with Porcupine Tree, Gavin has also played extensively with King Crimson as well as providing session drumming for a host of respected artists but his work with 05Ric has allowed him to develop some of the work that he has created outside these projects.

05Ric uses his voice, extended range bass and guitars to turn his love of sound into sonic tapestries. His vocals, virtuoso playing and a chance meeting between the two has led to one of the most interesting and complex musical collaborations in recent years.
The union of 05Ric’s distinctive style with Gavin’s extraordinary drumming has already produced some unique results but Gavin has stated that with The Man Who Sold Himself , ‘we have continued to push the boundaries of our rhythmic and harmonic possibilities, I believe these are some of the wildest rhythmic concepts that I have ever conjured and 05Ric has snaked his bass around.’

05Ric goes on to explain that lyrically the album deals with themes “based on the greed of the financial global crisis, the empty shallowness of goal seeking without passion or for its own sake and the destructive force left behind by selfish behaviour – but the central character through heightened awareness and right action discovers his true calling.”

The album, which was written over the last two years and recorded in mid-2011, is the duo’s first release since Circles in 2009. Circles was described by Classic Rock Prog as ‘bristling with instrumental technique and firepower… it is peppered with a pulsating, muscular funk that pushes through generic barriers to create its own unique space.’

The Man Who Sold Himself looks set to push these barriers even further.

Steven Wilson’s first ever solo tour of North America starts tonight (November 8th) in Orlando. The gig is the first of eight dates which will also see him visit Baltimore, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Montreal, Toronto and Chicago (click here for full details and ticket links). On the dates Steven will be playing material from his new album Grace for Drowning, as well as selections from his first solo album, Insurgentes.

Grace for Drowning entered the US Billboard Rock album chart at #19 (#13 in independent chart), the UK top 40 album chart at #34, both the Dutch and German national charts at #22 and debuted at #7 in the Polish national charts. The album has been critically acclaimed too, having been described by Mojo as ‘an immersive, ambitious project that demands repeated spins’ (4 stars), by Terrorizer as ‘a dense yet extremely coherent album, Grace for Drowning succeeds brilliantly… Prog album of the year, no less’ (5/5) and by Classic Rock Prog as ‘ a magnificent step up; he simply can’t stopped.’

For the Grace for Drowning tour, Wilson has worked extensively with Lasse Hoile, his long time visual collaborator, to create a show unlike nothing else that has ever done with his other bands, Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No-Man or Bass Communion.

The shows submerge fans in a rich sensory experience: rear speakers provide surround-sound effects, giant screens show off Lasse’s films made specifically to accompany these songs, and cutting-edge lighting designs give texture to each song. The heart of the performance is Wilson (on keys, guitar, and vocals) and his virtuoso band: Marco Minnemann (drums), Nick Beggs (bass), Theo Travis (flute and sax), Adam Holzman (keys), and John Wesley on guitars. John is replacing Aziz Ibrahim who played on the successful European tour. Three tracks recorded in London’s Shepherd Bush Empire as part of that tour are now available on the Grace for Drowning to the mini-site. Grace for Drowing mini-site

Ulver returned earlier this year with their new album Wars of the Roses. Early pioneers of Norwegian black metal, the band have continually evolved throughout their career and now stand as living legends of the dark music industry, blending rock, electronica, symphonic and chamber traditions along with noise and experimental music to create ground- breaking material.

Until recently however the band had remained exclusively within the studio. This changed in May 2009 when the band accepted an invitation to appear at the Norwegian Festival of Literature. The success of this gig lead to them embarking on a string of other gigs in 2009 and 2010, selling out prestigious venues such as the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, Volksbühne in Berlin and La Cigale in Paris before they returned to their homeland for this landmark gig at The Norwegian Opera House.

The 2 hour concert married tracks from throughout the band’s catalogue to stunning visuals to create a spectacle fitting for such a grand venue. This landmark show was recorded and will now be released as a limited edition 32 page rigid digibook 2 disc set (Blu-ray and DVD).

Gazpacho was formed in Oslo in 1996 by childhood friends Jon-Arne Vilbo and Thomas Andersen along with Jan-Henrik Ohme (later joined by Mikael Krømer, Robert R Johansen and Kristian Torp). The band have honed their unique sound, and a substantial international fan-base, over a string of critically acclaimed albums and numerous tours, including several with long-time supporters Marillion.

Missa Atropos, the latest album from Gazpacho, was released earlier this year on Kscope. The album was described by Classic Rock as ‘finely crafted, darkly atmospheric stuff’ and following its release the band embarked on a European tour.

As part of this tour the band played at the legendary Dingwalls venue in Camden. Classic Rock Prog described the evening as ‘sublime’ going on to state, ‘with new album Missa Atropos to draw from as well as a catalogue of songs that draw favourable comparison with both Radiohead and a more sedate Muse, they fill the best part of two hours with invention and brio.’

Impressions is the new album from Lunatic Soul is now available to pre-order from the Kscope store. Lunatic Soul is the solo project from Riverside creative force and lead singer, Mariusz Duda.

Impressions, the third album from Lunatic Soul, follows 2010’s acclaimed II (White Album) and features a number of tracks written in the sessions for both that and the self titled (Black Album) debut in 2008.

Mariusz felt that the compositions completed the theme set out on I & II and decided to return to the studio earlier this year to record the final instalment in the trilogy.

The album features brand new arrangements of songs with full 26 piece string section and haunting melodies from the band’s earliest days as pioneers of heavy music.

The record has been produced by Daniel Cavanagh and was recorded and mixed by Andrea Wright at the legendary Parr St Studios, Liverpool (where the likes of Elbow, Coldplay and Echo and the Bunnymen have also recorded albums). Three Fact Fader, Engineers’ second album was released last year on Kscope to widespread critical acclaim. The band now return with In Praise of More, their new album and their first with their new line-up.Mark Peters has moved to guitar and has been replaced by Daniel Land on bass and Matthew Linley has joined on drums. In addition to this respected solo artist Ulrich Schnauss, who had previously played keyboards live with the band has joined as full time member.
 
Although the majority of the songs on In Praise of More were recorded by Mark, with the assistance of Dave Potter, Ulrich was on hand to offer advice and point out ways to make what were essentially home recordings sound as stately and elegant as they do. Taking in everything from the synth-heavy krautpop of To An Evergreen to the autumnal acoustic folk of There Will Be Time and the wintery piano instrumental Nach Hause, the album strips back the layers of sound that characterised the band’s previous releases, but remains just as powerful. One of the highlights, the beautifully understated Twenty Paces, which blends The Blue Nile with almost jazz-like rhythms, is the first track that Mark and Ulrich co-produced.
 
The 2CD set also features an instrumental version of the album and is available from the Kscope store now.

Is This Music?

NAO are the Scottish based trio of Sam Healy (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, synths, sax, percussion), Ben Martin (drums, percussion, programming) and Bill Walsh (bass, synth bass, vocals). They describe themselves as playing their instruments within a computerised wall of sound.
 
The band’s debut release is now available to order from the Kscope store. A 4 track EP, titled Call Signs, it provides the perfect introduction to the band prior to the release of their debut album, Grappling Hooks, in early 2010.

 
Call Signs features a radio edit of the lead track Cell Count along with ‘Ceiling Poem’ (both taken from ‘Grappling Hooks’) a cover of I Only Have Eyes For You and 77 Hours remixed by Kscope label mates Engineers.

Acting as a bridge between No-Man’s elegiac 2008 return Schoolyard Ghosts and the forthcoming live concert DVD Mixtaped, Wherever There Is Light is a strictly limited edition release.

Engineers are back. Four years after the release of their landmark debut, the band return with their epic second album, Three Fact Fader.

The 13-track album was produced by the band along with Ken Thomas (Sigur Rós, M83, Maps) over a period of two years, with the final tracks being completed earlier this year. It comes packaged in stunning artwork by legendary music photographer Tom Sheehan.

Engineers are not like any other band. Onstage Simon Phipps is the singer, Dan Macbean is the guitarist, Mark Peters is the bassist and Sweeney is the drummer, but the real clue is in their name: they approach their music like engineers, carefully constructing wonderful walls of sound.

Following the rapturous reception that greeted their mini-album Folly in 2004 and debut Engineers the following year, it’s taken them a long time to build their epic second album, Three Fact Fader. After initial recording sessions, Engineers became unwitting victims of record company restructuring and the album was left in limbo, unfinished until the band reconvened earlier this year, largely motivated by public support.

The band have now found a home on Kscope and Three Fact Fader will be released on July 6th.

Chapters, a 2CD introduction to Anekdoten, is going to be released on Kscope on April 27th.

Anekdoten are considered one of the leading bands in contemporary progressive rock. The band formed in Sweden in 1991 and have released five albums on their own Virta label. Chapters is a 2CD set which mixes tracks from these albums along with rarities and unreleased tracks.

A new mini-site for Insurgentes is now online at www.insurgentes.org. In addition to audio clips, a free mp3 and downloads, the site also features a remix competition. The remix that Steven judges to be best will be included on a future official Steven Wilson release. If you are looking for some inspiration, there are two new mixes from Engineers (Kscope’s newest act) and Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson) already available to stream on the site.

The first single to be taken from the album, Harmony Korine, is available to pre-order from the site. Harmony Korine will be issued as a limited edition 7 inch vinyl single in a choice of three different colours – black, white, and blood red, each limited to 1,000 copies. The single will only be available through the mini-site.

A video for Harmony Korine is currently being made by long time collaborator Lasse Hoile and will be streamed from the site as soon as it’s ready! Lasse is also putting the finishing touches to the Insurgentes documentary. Trailers for the film are also streaming on the mini-site.

Acclaimed for his work with Porcupine Tree, Opeth and Anja Garbarek amongst others, Steven Wilson’s debut album Insurgentes will be released on Kscope on the 9th of March 2009 (24th February in the US and digitally from 16th February)

Comprising 10 new tracks that range from ballads and anthems to all-out industrial noise assaults, the dark, cinematic and richly textured album represents two years’ worth of creative output and numerous recording sessions worldwide in studios from Mexico City to Japan and Israel. 

While Wilson is a member of several bands including Blackfield, No-Man and Bass Communion, he explains that: “when I began writing these songs, I quickly realized that they would be best suited to an album under my own name.  It was an intuitive, almost unconscious writing process that resulted in a kind of ‘poetry of melancholy.”  The final product inhabits a similar experimental realm as recent albums by Thom Yorke, Portishead, and Nine Inch Nails.


Wilson recruited a stellar cast of guests to work on the album including bassist Tony Levin, drummer Gavin Harrison, and keyboardist Jordan Rudess, alongside Japanese Koto player Michiyo Yagi, British guitarist Sand Snowman, and jazz flautist and saxophonist Theo Travis.
