The EP is OUT NOW and features remixes by the Mercury nominated act The Invisible and respected newcomers Nedry alongside the title track and an alternate mix of previous single ‘Savage With Barometer’. In addition, the EP also features the band’s cover of ‘One Good Reason’ by Bob Mould. Upon hearing the NAO version of the track, Mould was so impressed that he invited the band to support him on his upcoming May UK tour (dates listed below).

Kscope reaches its 5^th anniversary this year and to celebrate the label are hosting two special evenings at The Garage in London. There will be four bands from the label’s roster playing on each night and the first to be announced are  Amplifier, Bruce Soord with Jonas Renkse (performing the Wisdom of Crowds album) and Nosound on Wednesday July 24^th, followed by Anathema and Mothlite on Thursday 25^th.

The initial batch of tickets for the gigs are on sale now. Tickets are priced at £18. There are also a limited number of two-day tickets available for £30. (all tickets subject to booking fee)

The remaining acts will be announced over the next few weeks. To ensure that fans of all acts who are playing get the chance to attend we shall be staggering the release of tickets to coincide with the artist announcements, so if you miss out this time please keep an eye out for further news and ticket releases.

The Pineapple Thief frontman, Bruce Soord, and Jonas Renkse, lead vocalist from Katatonia have announced a June 3rd, 2013 release date for Wisdom of Crowds, their new project for Kscope.

Originally written with Renkse’s voice in mind, Soord sought out the acclaimed Katatonia vocalist to complete the compositions and release the music to the masses. Despite the rigorous schedules of The Pineapple Thief and Katatonia, the two musicians were eventually able to connect.

Both artists are currently enjoying unparalleled success with their main bands.

The Pineapple Thief have just completed a successful European tour following the release of their latest album, All The Wars in September. Rocksound described All The Wars as “an album of Muse-like, slow burning guitar anthems”, while Classic Rock stated it was “the sound of a band reaching the height of their powers” and Prog argued it was an “elegant, sophisticated work… moody and meaningful, introspective and universal.”

Katatonia also released a new album last year. Dead End Kings was released on the Peaceville label in August and reinforced their position as “one of the most consistently fascinating bands in modern heavy music.” (Metal Hammer, 9/10). The album featured heavily in the album of the year polls of magazines around the world and was also nominated for a Grammy in the band’s homeland of Sweden.

The Pineapple Thief will have just completed a European tour in March and they will be following these with four UK dates in May.

The band have announced this week that Bruce will be recording a special acoustic collection of TPT songs, with the track list being chosen by fans. These tracks will be released in the form of a limited edition download dropcard and available exclusively to fans attending the UK shows next month. Only 1000 of these cards will be created.

Nosound return in May with their new studio album, Afterthoughts. For the album Giancarlo Erra and the band have been joined by the former Porcupine Tree and Blackfield drummer, Chris Maitland.

Afterthoughts is the Nosound’s fourth studio album, their first since 2009′s A Sense Of Loss. That album was described by Goldmine as ‘Nosound’s most accomplished recording’ (4/5) and Prog magazine stated that ‘the expression of their loss is indubitably our substantial gain’. Since then Nosound have also released the 2011 semi-acoustic album, The Northern Religion Of Things and the recent EP, At The Pier, as well as playing regular live dates around Europe.

Giancarlo has been writing material for Afterthoughts over the past two years but a series line up changes in late 2012 have shaped the way in which the record has evolved. Firstly Chris agreed to join the band and shortly after this Marianne De Chastelaine came on board to add cello parts to the album. Following this Marco Berni (keyboards) and Giulio Caneponi (drums) were also welcomed as full time members of the band joining Paolo Vigliarolo (guitars) and Alessandro Luci (bass).

Giancarlo has talked about the sense of enthusiasm these changes brought and the effect it had on the album; ‘when we met for the second phase of the writing process, when we selected and arranged the material, it involved a total and immediate agreement within all of us, we immediately felt we were doing the right thing’.

Maitland also appeared on At The Pier and his powerful and inventive drumming has added a new dimension to the Nosound dynamic which is sure to impress fans, new and old. Giancarlo has stated that, ‘in some way I feel this album is more ‘direct’ and powerful, and this is naturally reflected in both music and lyrics.’

Afterthoughts is available to pre-order from the Kscope store as a double LP and as a 2disc set featuring the stereo mix of the album on CD plus a DVD-A / DVD-V with 5.1 surround high resolution 24bit / 96kHz mixes.

Steven Wilson has announced additional UK headline dates for October 2013, following his hugely successful European tour which finishes this week.

Ulver returned in 2012 with their latest album Childhood’s End. Early pioneers of Norwegian black metal, the band have continually evolved throughout their career and now stand as living legends of the dark music industry, blending rock, electronica, symphonic and chamber traditions along with noise and experimental music to create ground-breaking material.

Until recently however the band had remained exclusively within the studio. This changed in May 2009 when the band accepted an invitation to appear at the Norwegian Festival Of Literature. Kscope are pleased to announce that Echo Street, the new album from Amplifier will released on the label on March 11^th 2013. The album looks set to build upon the success of The Octopus, the critically acclaimed double album that the band self-released in 2011.

Henry Fool’s Men Singing, a four track instrumental album featuring members of No-Man, I Monster and Roxy Music – will be released on Kscope on March 11th.

Produced and arranged by band founders keyboardist Stephen Bennett and guitarist Tim Bowness (Steven Wilson’s creative partner in No-Man), the album has been mixed by Jarrod Gosling (I Monster/Regal Worm), who also contributes Mellotron, glockenspiel and the wonderfully surreal artwork.

Appearing on Everyone In Sweden and Man Singing, Phil Manzanera’s legendary guitar skills can be heard in the context of long-form instrumental music for the first time since his celebrated stint in 1970s mavericks Quiet Sun.

A vibrant and instinctive contemporary take on Progressive and Jazz Rock styles, Men Singing will be available as a limited edition cd in vinyl replica artwork, a standard cd and an LP.

At The Pier, a new strictly limited EP from Nosound is now shipping from the Kscope store. For the tracks Nosound are joined by Marianne De Chastelaine on cello and Chris Maitland, formerly of Porcupine Tree and Blackfield, on drums. Chris will also be appearing on all the tracks on Afterthoughts, and his powerful and inventive drumming has added a new dimension to the Nosound dynamic.

Kscope recently caught up with Giancarlo and Chris to discuss the EP and the recording process, you can watch a video of the conversation now on the Nosound mini-site.

Giancarlo Erra had previously described the tracks that make up At The Pier in this way:

In general I would say that ‘The Anger Song’ is a more rough and bleak song than usual Nosound, probably even more powerful and ‘angry’. ‘A New Start’ is more Nosound but almost uplifting in a melancholic way, majestic in music with more twisted lyrics, with a mix of blues and post-rock all packed in a song. ‘Two Monkeys’ is a piano/upright/sampled strings, with deep meaningful lyrics for a different piano song than previous Nosound and featuring Marianne De Chastelaine’s cello.

Semi-acoustic show in Treviso

Nosound will be taking a break from the studio to perform two dates in Italy. The first is in Treviso on November 30^th and the second is in Treviso on December 28^th. For both gigs the band will be performing as a semi-acoustic trio (comprising Giancarlo on vocals and keyboards, Paolo Vigliarolo on guitars and Alessandro Luci on upright bass).

The second disc features live versions of the opening 3 tracks from Night, recorded at the Gloria Theatre in Cologne during the European tour to support their acclaimed 2012 album, March Of Ghosts. Here is the live version of ‘Upside Down’ from the bonus disc, streaming from our Soundcloud profile.

Formed in Oslo in 1996 by childhood friends Jon-Arne Vilbo and Thomas Andersen along with Jan-Henrik Ohme (later joined by Mikael Krømer, Lars Erik Asp and Kristian Torp), Gazpacho have honed their unique sound over a string of critically acclaimed albums and numerous tours, including several with long-time supporters Marillion.

Night was originally released in 2007. A musical interpretation of a dream or stream of consciousness, it was the band’s first true concept album in that it is one long song split into five parts. This structure attempts to recreate the pattern of a dream where the mind of the dreamer floats in and out of different memories and worlds. The album explores the question of where dreams end and reality begins and the mind as the tool that has to decide what to believe. During the dream the ‘character’ travels through various memories, both real and imagined, and sees the world from the angles of different people. Jon-Arne describes the album as being, ‘about life and the various ways of interpreting existence.’

Night was Gazpacho’s fourth studio album and was the album that introduced the band to a much larger audience. Despite the high regard with which the album is held, by fans and the band alike, there has always been a few small issues with aspects of the sound that have bugged the band and other features of the songs which have emerged through playing them live for the last five years. This new Kscope edition of the album has allowed the band to address these issues while still remaining faithful to the original.

For the new edition, which is packaged in a deluxe digi-book and comes with a bonus disc, the band wanted to re-record the drums and once they started this process they found that there were a few other tweaks that could be made. Thomas explains the changes that they made,

‘we re-recorded the drums and some of the vocals that were distorted in the original recording session. We also added some of the tracks that were left off the original version to add further depth to the sound. We also remixed and for the first time for Night, mastered it at Cutting Room Studios in Stockholm.’

The past year has been a busy period for the various members of Porcupine Tree.  Steven Wilson is currently gathering rave reviews for his solo records and accompanying tours and also embarked on a rare tour with No-Man, Richard Barbieri has released an acclaimed album with Steve Hogarth from Marillion, Gavin Harrison has continued is successful partnership with 05Ric and Colin Edwin has being working on a solo record along with a new album from his Metallic Taste of Blood project.

Despite all this activity, fans of the band have still been clamouring for a new Porcupine Tree release. This wait ends on November 19th with the release of Octane Twisted¸ a double disc live set recorded during the tour that supported the band’s most recent albumThe Incident. The album went top 30 in both the UK and USA, and the world tour climaxed with sold out shows at Royal Albert Hall in London and Radio City Music Hall in New York.

The album marked another step forward in the incredible journey of the band from a solo studio project created by Steven Wilson in the late eighties, to a grammy nominated act and one of the world’s most revered live bands.

Octane Twisted features the album in its entirety recorded in Chicago. The second CD contains 5 tracks classic PT tracks also recorded in Chicago, along with 3 highlights from the band’s landmark show at Royal Albert Hall.

The inaugural Progressive Music Awards, organised by PROG magazine, took place last week at Kew Gardens in London. In amongst awards for 70′s prog pioneers such as Rick Wakeman, Genesis and Carl Palmer, Kscope artists helped represent the new generation, walking away with two of the ten awards.

ANATHEMA won the Live Event award for the Kscope ‘A Night At The Union Chapel’ event along with their blistering gig at Koko.

STEVEN WILSON was also honoured with the prestigious Guiding Light award.

Directed by long-time visual collaborator Lasse Hoile, Get All You Deserve was filmed in Mexico City during the recent Grace For Drowning Tour. The film is part of a new high definition audio-visual set which captures the spectacular live experience that Wilson and Hoile created for the tour on Blu-ray, DVD and 2CD.

Grace For Drowning was the second album released under Wilson’s own name, following 2009’s exceptionally well-receivedInsurgentes. The album, released in September 2011, entered the UK top 40 album chart at #34, both the Dutch and German national charts at #22, the US Billboard Rock album chart at #19 (#13 in independent chart) and debuted at #7 in the Polish national charts.

Following the release of Grace For Drowning, Steven embarked on his first ever solo tour, assembling a virtuoso band, featuring Marco Minnemann (drums), Nick Beggs (bass), Theo Travis (flute and sax), Adam Holzman (keys) and Niko Tsonev (guitars), to accompany him. For the shows he worked extensively with Lasse to create a show unlike nothing else that he had ever done with his other bands, Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No-Man or Bass Communion.

The shows submerged fans in a rich sensory experience: rear speakers provide surround-sound effects, giant screens show off Lasse’s films made specifically to accompany these songs, and cutting-edge lighting designs giving texture to each song.

Get All You Deserve captures one of the highlight shows from the tour. Recorded at a sold-out Teatro Metropólitan in Mexico City, the gig features tracks from both Wilson’s solo albums along with the new, as yet unreleased, track Luminol.

The video for ‘Untouchable (part one)’, the opening track from Anathema’s recent album Weather Systems is now online.

The video which reflects the themes created in the album was edited together by Lasse Hoile, the acclaimed director and filmmaker, best known for his work with Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree.

In September Anathema embarked on an extensive European tour. Starting with a special gig with an orchestra in a Roman amphitheatre in Plovdiv, Bulgaria the tour will then visit Romania, Finland, Norway, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. Following these headline shows the band will be joining Opeth throughout November as guests for a string of shows in UK, Ireland, Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany. It has just been announced that support for some of the dates will come from Astra. More news on other support artistes to be announced soon.

The Pineapple Thief have teamed up with esteemed photographer Mark Mawson, whose Aqueous photography is being used throughout the artwork for their ninth album on Kscope, All The Wars.

Mark is an international award-winning photographer and most recently his Aqueous video was projected onto the walls of Buckingham Palace in front of The Queen for the backdrop of Sir Paul McCartney’s ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ as part of the diamond jubilee celebrations in London. His Aqueous work has become very collectable in recent years and the series ’Aqueous Fluoreau’ (from which the TPT artwork is taken) went viral at the beginning of 2012.

As soon as The Pineapple Thief saw the images in the series they knew that this was the perfect reflection for the new album. Bruce recalls when he was introduced to Mark’s work that ‘I thought it was extremely striking, as an initial image it had a ‘hook’ (if I can get away with using that musical analogy). But on further inspection, the way the colours interacted in such a complex and emotive way was, to me, just brilliant’.

As an album which explores the theme of separation, All The Wars needed artwork which truly reflected the music. ‘Because the music of The Pineapple Thief is dominated by the theme of our interactions with each other – birth, love, life, conflict and death, Mark’s photography complimented this perfectly.  The way the colours are interacting at first seem effortless,  but on closer inspection you can see the conflict, each burst of colour fighting to grab the place in life, but all of them somehow interacting, perhaps in a amicable way!  And on top of that, take a step back, the main cover image actually looks like an atomic bomb exploding.  Perfect really’. Bruce goes on to add that ‘it was really great to have the opportunity to use Mark’s work, especially as he has recently worked with Elton John and Paul McCartney.  The icing on the cake!’.

We recently met with Mark Mawson who answered some of our burning questions:

You’re considered a specialist in underwater photography. What inspired you initially to start experimenting with this format?

There are two sides to my underwater photography –  (1) people, which could be anything from fashion, beauty, sports people, celebrities or ‘normal’ people and (2) my ‘Aqueous’ work which is colours in water. I started shooting people underwater after doing a shoot that worked really well and looked beautiful, so I thought I would do a lot more of that style and specialise in it. I was inspired to shoot my Aqueous work after watching milk being poured into coffee. I was intrigued by the way the milk blended and flowed with the coffee. I had seen lots of ink in water imagery but I wanted to produce something which had more ‘body’ to the shapes that are formed.

You’ve admittedly spent a long time perfecting the process, what do you like about this type of photography?

I really enjoy the different shapes that can be produced and also the fact that different viewers can see different things in each shot, a bit like looking up at the clouds in the sky and seeing animals etc. I can control the process to a degree, obviously gravity plays its part, but by varying the density and volume of the liquids I use can give me different shapes.

Are you a big music fan? How did you come to be working on the Jubilee concert display?

I am a big music fan and listen to a whole range of genres depending on my mood, I don’t think I have a favourite at the moment, too many to mention.

I shot an Aqueous video last year which was originally to be used as a giant backdrop for Elton John in his Las Vegas gigs. The same production company that I worked with on the video were producing the projections on Buckingham Palace for the Jubilee concert and thought it would work perfectly for Sir Paul McCartney’s ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ number. That was a very proud moment seeing my work projected onto the Palace.

Musicians are constantly asked who inspires them to write the songs they do. Who in your field has been a marked influence to you?

Lighting plays a key role in my work and I’m mainly inspired by some great painters and cinematographers. Painters such as Caravaggio and cinematographers such as Vittorio Storaro and Conrad Hall inspire me greatly.

Some of your images feature people and some of them are more abstract – tell us what’s next to come from Mark Mawson?

Next will be more Aqueous work and underwater people & fashion. My Aqueous work is definitely taking over and is what I’m becoming known for.

No-Man have recently announced their first series of tour dates for several years, with dates booked in Poland, Germany, Netherlands and the UK in late August and early September. The line-up for these dates will be the same that performed on the recent Love And Endings album (Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson joined by classical violinist Steve Bingham and regular collaborators Michael Bearpark, Andrew Booker, Stephen Bennett and Pete Morgan).

Love And Endings, a CD & DVD set which is now available to pre-order for Burning Shed, was recorded in front of a sell-out crowd at the Leamington Spa Assembly on October 14th, 2011. This show was part of special night to mark Burning Shed’s 10^thanniversary which limited the No-Man set to 50mins but they shall be playing a full set on the upcoming tour. There will also be a special acoustic set from Daniel Cavanagh from Anathema before the London show.

For the shows he worked extensively with Lasse to create a show unlike nothing else that he had ever done with his other bands, Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No-Man or Bass Communion.

The shows submerged fans in a rich sensory experience: rear speakers provide surround-sound effects, giant screens show off Lasse’s films made specifically to accompany these songs, and cutting-edge lighting designs giving texture to each song.

Get All You Deserve captures one of the highlight shows from the tour. Recorded at a sold-out Teatro Metropólitan in Mexico City, the gig features tracks from both Wilson’s solo albums along with the new, as yet unreleased, track Luminol.

All The Wars, the new album from The Pineapple Thief, will be released on Kscope on September 3rd.

The album is the latest step for the band who over the last few years have truly emerged onto a higher stage… bigger and better tours, triumphant festival slots, recording at Peter Gabriel’s Real World studios, artwork designed by Storm Thorgerson and new management all give the sense of act who are destined for greater things.

Much of this is down to the band’s 2010 album, Someone Here Is Missing, and the reaction it received. While this release, along with 2008’s Tightly Unwound, was many people’s introduction to the band they have actually spent the past ten years quietly building up a dedicated fan base across the globe, selling over 50,000 records and nurturing their ‘bittersweet’ progressive sound.

All The Wars marks another leap in the band’s progression, as frontman Bruce Soord continues to mature as a songwriter and the band’s ever growing confidence and status allows them to move in bold musical directions, including the use of a 22-piece string section and a choir. Soord explains, ‘no expense has been spared regarding the production of this record but at its heart it’s still a rock record. It’s very heavy in parts and very delicate and beautiful in others.’

Mothlite is the brainchild of Daniel O’Sullivan. A prolific composer and multi-instrumentalist, O’Sullivan is a member of Ulver and a regular collaborator with Sunn O))), Guapo, Æthenor, Miracle and Grumbling Fur.
Mothlite allows Daniel, along with Knut, his musical partner in Mothlite, to move in different musical directions to those taken by his other projects, recalling the deepest remnants of 80’s sounds (Talk Talk, Japan, Cocteau Twins) and fusing it with an innovative, forward-thinking approach to programming and sound design. The result is a grandiose gothic-pop euphoria that retains a subliminally progressive musical depth and O’Sullivan’s songwriting collaborations with The Big Pink and Ulver are apparent in Mothlite’s keen sense of production and lush atmospheric arrangements.

A Fine Day to Exit was originally released in 2001 and was produced by Nick Griffiths, notable for his previous work with Pink Floyd.  The album represented a departure from the more metal orientated style of the band’s earlier releases, and combines a constantly shifting blend of rock potency and delicate atmospherics. This artistic direction developed further on A Natural Disaster, released two years later. A Natural Disaster was Anathema’s last album prior to 2010′s We’re Here Because We’re Here, the predecessor to Weather Systems.

Both classic albums are presented in a gatefold package and pressed on heavyweight (180gm) vinyl, A Fine Day to Exit and A Natural Disaster, available on Kscope from June 4^th, are now available to pre-order form the Kscope store. Weather Systems is currently available on Double vinyl, CD and limited CD& DVD-V editions.

A collection of classic psychedelic classics reworked by Ulver, available from May 28th. Video for ‘Magic Hollow’ now online

Early pioneers of Norwegian black metal, Ulver have continually evolved throughout their career and now stand as living legends of the dark music industry, blending rock, electronica, symphonic and chamber traditions along with noise and experimental music to create groundbreaking material.

Last year they released the critically acclaimed War Of The Roses album which was described by Zero Tolerance as ‘a beautiful record of startlingly powerful depth’ and Mojo magazine elaborated ‘Ulver’s genre-weaving musical noir channels David Sylvian, the ghosts of Coil and Pink Floyd in sumptuous melancholy mode.’ 

They return with Childhood’s End, a collection of classic – mostly obscure – psychedelic tracks recorded by the band over an extended period and a few different sessions; starting in late 2008 and ending in late 2011, ‘this is the stuff that we sit at home and get stoked about’ explains Kristoffer Rygg in a recent Kscope video interview.

Fog Electric is the follow-up to Grappling Hooks, NAO‘s debut which received massive critical acclaim when it was released in 2010. The album was produced by Tony Doogan (Super Furry Animals, Mogwai, Teenage Fanclub, Belle & Sebastian)

The title, taken from the lyric of the track ‘Mirador’, introduces a stormy theme that runs throughout the record’s sounds – in the crashing electronics, delicate lulls, mystery and hidden soul beneath the surface: a leitmotif also reflected in the typically stylish and dramatic artwork.

“It’s an album about doubt and loss, but there’s a counterbalancing sense of resignation and even optimism too,” explains singer Sam Healy. “One of the main themes is that of searching for meaning in a scientific, post-religious world. Science is absolutely a force for good, but after it showed us that the physical world is all there is, and that far from stripping experiences of their mystery this revelation actually makes them more mysterious, it sort of left us to our own devices in terms of producing the unscripted, improvised drama that is life-minus-god.”

North Atlantic Oscillation is the climactic phenomenon caused by fluctuations in the atmospheric pressure between the Icelandic low and Azores high; a clash of hot and cold. It seems a perfect tag. Fog Electric is an album of contrasts from a band of contrasts. Timeless Rock influences collide with the latest laptop technology, amidst a combination of dark foreboding tones and blissed-out serotonin-fuelled pastoral sweeps.

At the end of September Kscope hosted a special night at the Union Chapel in London. Nosound, Engineers, Bruce from The Pineapple Thief and Anathema all performed stripped back sets in front of a sold-out crowd at this breath-taking venue.

Not The Weapon But The Hand is the new album from Steve Hogarth and Richard Barbieri. The album is now available and can now be ordered from the Kscope store.

Hogarth is best known as the frontman of Marillion, the progressive rock legends that he joined in 1989. In addition to the 12 albums Marillion have released in this time he has also recorded and toured as a solo artist, under the name h.

In recent years Richard Barbieri has been a core member of Porcupine Tree playing keyboards on all the band’s albums since 1993 as well as releasing two solo albums, Things Buried and Stranger Inside. Prior to this, it was in the new-wave pioneers Japan that he originally came to prominence, helping to create the groundbreaking synthesiser sound that defined the band and influenced a whole raft of artists to follow.

Classic Rock Prog have described the album as ‘a love letter from the darkest recesses of the mind, explicit and clever and memorable’  and the film maker Christopher Kenworthy, who has previously directed the video for Dreaming Light by Anathema, has been inspired to create a new video for the track Naked. March of Ghosts, the new album from Gazpacho was released last week.

Mothlite is the brainchild of Daniel O’Sullivan. A prolific composer and multi-instrumentalist, O’Sullivan is a member of Ulver and a regular collaborator with Sunn O))), Guapo, Æthenor, Miracle and Grumbling Fur.

Mothlite allows him to move in different musical directions to those taken by his other projects, recalling the deepest remnants of 80’s sounds (Talk Talk, Japan, Cocteau Twins) and fusing it with an innovative, forward-thinking approach to programming and sound design. The result is a grandiose gothic-pop euphoria that retains a subliminally progressive musical depth and O’Sullivan’s songwriting collaborations with The Big Pink and Ulver are apparent in Mothlite’s keen sense of production and lush atmospheric arrangements.

Mothlite transcend any obvious reference point and follow a most novel path of paradoxes. Love, death, death of love, selfloathing, megalomania. All dipped in a thick treacly molasses of ecstatic melody.

Kscope presents ‘A Night at the Tabernacle’

North Atlantic Oscillation & Mothlite live in London, Wednesday 2nd May

On Wednesday 2nd May Kscope will be hosting another evening, this time to celebrate the release of the new albums from North Atlantic Oscillation and new signings Mothlite. North Atlantic Oscillation will release Fog Electric on April 30th with Dark Age from Mothlite following on May 14th.

The venue will be The Tabernacle in London’s Notting Hill and tickets are now available from the venue’s website.

North Atlantic Oscillation’s new album Fog Electric will be released on April 30th through Kscope. It produced by Tony Doogan (Super Furry Animals, Mogwai, Teenage Fanclub, Belle & Sebastian). Fog Electric is the follow-up to Grappling Hooks, NAO‘s debut which received massive critical acclaim when it was released in 2010.

The title, taken from the lyric of the track Mirador, introduces a stormy theme that runs throughout the record’s sounds – in the crashing electronics, delicate lulls, mystery and hidden soul beneath the surface: a leitmotif also reflected in the typically stylish and dramatic artwork.

“It’s an album about doubt and loss, but there’s a counterbalancing sense of resignation and even optimism too,” explains singer Sam Healy. “One of the main themes is that of searching for meaning in a scientific, post-religious world. Science is absolutely a force for good, but after it showed us that the physical world is all there is, and that far from stripping experiences of their mystery this revelation actually makes them more mysterious, it sort of left us to our own devices in terms of producing the unscripted, improvised drama that is life-minus-god.”

North Atlantic Oscillation is the climactic phenomenon caused by fluctuations in the atmospheric pressure between the Icelandic low and Azores high; a clash of hot and cold. It seems a perfect tag. Fog Electric is an album of contrasts from a band of contrasts. Timeless Rock influences collide with the latest laptop technology, amidst a combination of dark foreboding tones and blissed-out serotonin-fuelled pastoral sweeps.

Kscope presents ‘A Night at the Tabernacle’

Anathema return in April with Weather Systems, their brand new studio album.

Weather Systems is the follow-up 2010’s We’re Here Because We’re Here. That album featured prominently in numerous end-of-year polls and the producer, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), has described it as ‘definitely among the best albums I’ve ever had the pleasure to work on.’

The bar for Weather Systems has been set pretty high then but Daniel Cavanagh from the band is certain that the album will exceed these lofty expectations, ‘it feels like we are at a creative peak right now, and this album reflects that. Everything from the production to the writing to the performances are a step up from our last album.’ He continues, ‘This is not background music for parties. The music is written to deeply move the listener, to uplift or take the listener to the coldest depths of the soul.’

The intertwining melodic structures of these profoundly beautiful songs are intensely powerful, yet simple. These are songs that will transport the listener closer to the heart of life, that is to say, to the heart of themselves.
It is also an album of polarity. The play of opposites; light and shade, birth and death, love and fear. The simple truths of life and loss, hope and strength and darker internal themes are all explored here. 

The album was recorded in Liverpool, North Wales and Oslo, each place significant to Anathema past, present and future. The record was produced and mastered by five times Norwegian Grammy nominated Christer-André Cederberg (Animal Alpha, In the Woods…, Drawn), who Daniel has described as ‘a revelation. His calmness and brilliance has helped to bring about the greatest inter-band chemistry that Anathema have experienced together in their career.’ This career stretches back to 1990 when the band formed in Liverpool. Since then the band have embarked on a remarkable musical journey, initially emerging as pioneers of melodic heavy music and continually evolving over the ensuing years, always remaining true to their original goal of creating forward thinking, meaningful, passionate and honest music.

Anathema are a collective of two families; brothers and childhood friends. This album will please fans who call for more of Lee Douglas’s vocals, as her role within Anathema’s brand of alternative, melodic rock has matured to become an integral energy. In this way and more, Weather Systems is the sound of a band finding their voice and growing in stature, moving further along their artistic path with a truly stunning musical vision.

Their best ever work? ‘Not yet’ says Daniel, but he does believe that with Weather Systems they have surpassed previous glories; ‘we are pleased and proud of the record and we feel that, alongside the best moments of WHBWH, this record contains our very best work so far in what is becoming a long career.’

Gazpacho return with their new album, March Of Ghosts, which will be released on Kscope in March 2012.

Formed in Oslo in 1996 by childhood friends Jon-Arne Vilbo and Thomas Andersen along with Jan-Henrik Ohme (later joined by Mikael Krømer, Lars Erik Asp and Kristian Torp), Gazpacho have honed their unique sound over a string of critically acclaimed albums and numerous tours, including several with long-time supporters Marillion.

March Of Ghosts is the band’s follow-up to Missa Atropos, which was released on Kscope in 2011 along with the live album, London. London was recorded on the band’s recent European tour and the success of this tour helped provide the genesis for March Of Ghosts, as Jon-Arne explains: ‘the previous tour gave us lots of inspiration. So, the week after returning we went straight into the studio to capture whatever came. As a result, the majority of the album was written in a day writing orgy where Mikael, Thomas and I got together and jammed for a full day and night… “March of Ghosts” was surprisingly easy to write.’

Such was the success of these early sessions that a lot of the material that can be heard on the final album comes from this original jam session. This material was then honed, dissected and refined throughout the summer and autumn of 2011 to create a coherent whole.

While Missa Atropos can be viewed as a concept album, following the story of one person leaving everything behind, Thomas sees March Of Ghosts is much more as a collection of short tales; ‘The idea was to have the lead character spend a night where all these ghosts (dead and alive) would march past him to tell their stories.’

Characters include Haitian war criminals, the crew of the Marie Celeste, a returning American WWI soldier who finds himself in 2012 and the ghost of an English comedy writer who was wrongly accused of treason and who will sit for eternity listening to gramophone recordings of the broadcasts he did on enemy radio. As lead singer Jan-Henrik explains, ‘They are short stories. They are a march of ghosts. They are tales that need to be told.’

These tales can be heard from March 12th 2012. The band will also be on tour during March and April.

Kscope is pleased to announce the release of ‘Not The Weapon But The Hand’, the debut album from Steve Hogarth and Richard Barbieri. The album will be available from February 27th 2012.

Hogarth is best known as the frontman of Marillion, the progressive rock legends that he joined in 1989, following spells in The Europeans and How We Live. In addition to the 12 albums Marillion have released in this time he has also recorded and toured as a solo artist, under the name h.

In recent years Richard Barbieri has been a core member of Porcupine Tree playing keyboards on all the band’s albums since 1993 as well as releasing two solo albums, Things Buried and Stranger Inside. Prior to this, it was in the new-wave pioneers Japan that he originally came to prominence, helping to create the groundbreaking synthesiser sound that defined the band and influenced the likes of The Human League, Duran Duran, Gary Numan, Talk Talk, Kate Bush and a whole raft of artists to follow.

The band also influenced Hogarth, at that point playing keyboards in The Europeans; ‘when I was in my mid-twenties Japan’s ‘Tin Drum’ album was a firm favourite and truly a groundbreaking work… Japan were one of those rare bands where each musician seemed to have reinvented his instrument overnight. Central to this sound was the unmistakable synthesiser programming/playing of my, now, chum Mr B.’

Many years later Porcupine Tree played some shows with Marillion and Steve invited Richard to be part of The H band on his ‘Ice Cream Genius’ album and subsequent tour (‘I asked him “Can you make me a sound which starts off like a gong and turns into a jet engine?” – it took him roughly 2 minutes…’) and this association developed into what Hogarth describes as ‘an easy working relationship which rapidly became an understanding beyond music.’

It wasn’t surprising then that the duo decided to collaborate on a joint project, a venture initiated by Barbieri as Hogarth recalls; ‘I remember where I was when the email from Richard arrived airing the possibility of a collaboration. I was in Starbucks in Leeds on tour a few years back. From that day forward it was on my mind fairly constantly. The only problem was finding the time to collaborate in between my Marillion schedule and his Porcupine Tree schedule. This year – a week here and a week there – we have managed to do it. Richard has sent me a number of beautiful and unusual instrumentals and I have found lyric ideas to create sometimes songs, sometimes narratives against his musical landscapes. 

‘It also goes beyond what you might expect from the two of us… The album consists of music which is at times moving, complex, multilayered (both instrumentally and vocally) spooky, goofy and of course, very personal to me.

‘I am now as excited about this album as I was at the prospect of the collaboration in the first-place.  Ain’t it great when a plan comes together?!…’

Not The Weapon But The Hand was completed in late 2011 and features occasional appearances from Danny Thompson on double bass, Arran Ahmun (John Martyn) and Chris Maitland (ex-Porcupine Tree, No-Man, Blackfield) on drums and guitar and string arrangement contributions from Dave Gregory (XTC).

The Man Who Sold Himself is the third album from the collaboration between Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison and 05Ric, the multi-instrumentalist, singer songwriter . The album will be released on Kscope on February 27th 2012 as a 2 disc set which, alongside the stereo mix of the album on CD, features a 5.1 mix on DVD, allowing fans to enjoy the intricate complexities of the album in full surround glory. In addition to being voted Best Progressive Drummer four years in a row in the Modern Drummer Magazine’s readers poll. He was also recently invited to perform on the David Letterman show as part of his Drum Solo week.

Best known for his work with Porcupine Tree, Gavin has also played extensively with King Crimson as well as providing session drumming for a host of respected artists but his work with 05Ric has allowed him to develop some of the work that he has created outside these projects.

05Ric uses his voice, extended range bass and guitars to turn his love of sound into sonic tapestries. His vocals, virtuoso playing and a chance meeting between the two has led to one of the most interesting and complex musical collaborations in recent years.
The union of 05Ric’s distinctive style with Gavin’s extraordinary drumming has already produced some unique results but Gavin has stated that with The Man Who Sold Himself , ‘we have continued to push the boundaries of our rhythmic and harmonic possibilities, I believe these are some of the wildest rhythmic concepts that I have ever conjured and 05Ric has snaked his bass around.’

05Ric goes on to explain that lyrically the album deals with themes “based on the greed of the financial global crisis, the empty shallowness of goal seeking without passion or for its own sake and the destructive force left behind by selfish behaviour – but the central character through heightened awareness and right action discovers his true calling.”

The album, which was written over the last two years and recorded in mid-2011, is the duo’s first release since Circles in 2009. Circles was described by Classic Rock Prog as ‘bristling with instrumental technique and firepower… it is peppered with a pulsating, muscular funk that pushes through generic barriers to create its own unique space.’

The Man Who Sold Himself looks set to push these barriers even further.

At the end of September Kscope hosted a special night at the Union Chapel in London. Nosound, Engineers, Bruce from The Pineapple Thief and Anathema all performed stripped back sets in this breath-taking venue.

Live recordings of the artists involved along with interviews, recorded at sound-check, backstage and aftershow, are featured in the latest Kscope podcast which is now online.

The Union Chapel in north London; arguably London’s nicest venue. It’s a working church, built in the Victorian gothic revival style in the 1870s, it’s also a centre for the arts. It’s unspoiled inside, the audience sit in pews, it’s gorgeous. We invited four of the Kscope family to perform unique versions of some of their repertoire: you’ll hear tunes from Nosound, Engineers, Bruce Soord from The Pineapple Thief (with Alx Leeks) and Anathema. PLUS pre-show, backstage and aftershow interviews with all the artistes as we were (very kindly) allowed to go running around with a microphone.

Steven Wilson’s first ever solo tour of North America starts tonight (November 8th) in Orlando. The gig is the first of eight dates which will also see him visit Baltimore, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Montreal, Toronto and Chicago (click here for full details and ticket links). On the dates Steven will be playing material from his new album Grace for Drowning, as well as selections from his first solo album, Insurgentes.

Grace for Drowning entered the US Billboard Rock album chart at #19 (#13 in independent chart), the UK top 40 album chart at #34, both the Dutch and German national charts at #22 and debuted at #7 in the Polish national charts. The album has been critically acclaimed too, having been described by Mojo as ‘an immersive, ambitious project that demands repeated spins’ (4 stars), by Terrorizer as ‘a dense yet extremely coherent album, Grace for Drowning succeeds brilliantly… Prog album of the year, no less’ (5/5) and by Classic Rock Prog as ‘ a magnificent step up; he simply can’t stopped.’

For the Grace for Drowning tour, Wilson has worked extensively with Lasse Hoile, his long time visual collaborator, to create a show unlike nothing else that has ever done with his other bands, Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No-Man or Bass Communion.

The shows submerge fans in a rich sensory experience: rear speakers provide surround-sound effects, giant screens show off Lasse’s films made specifically to accompany these songs, and cutting-edge lighting designs give texture to each song. The heart of the performance is Wilson (on keys, guitar, and vocals) and his virtuoso band: Marco Minnemann (drums), Nick Beggs (bass), Theo Travis (flute and sax), Adam Holzman (keys), and John Wesley on guitars. John is replacing Aziz Ibrahim who played on the successful European tour. Three tracks recorded in London’s Shepherd Bush Empire as part of that tour are now available on the Grace for Drowning to the mini-site. The tracks soundtrack short videos made by Lasse featuring pictures taken on the tour.
