A message from Bruce

The new album from The Pineapple Thief. Artwork by Storm Thorgerson (Pink Floyd, MUSE, Biffy Clyro).

A decade after they began and The Pineapple Thief are set to become your favourite new band.

Someone Here is Missing is: “A record of dark edges, full of love and regret, my life in the last eighteen months pretty much,” according to singer/songwriter Bruce Soord. It also happens to be their best yet.

With 2008’s acclaimed Tightly Unwound album – which launched the renowned Kscope label – the band suddenly found themselves celebrated at both home and abroad. “Everything was suddenly in place for us to move on to the next level as a band,” says Soord, “We just had to make a great record, no pressure then…”

As prolific a songwriter as Soord might be – The Pineapple Thief have a double CD called 3000 Days of extraordinary songs culled from their back catalogue – even he decided to bring new colours to his pallet when creating Someone Here is Missing, adding keyboards and samples of sound to bring the bubbling, almost threatening undercurrent of the band’s songs to life.

It worked too, it’s the album that Soord’s most proud of and so he should be. Storm Thorgerson (Pink Floyd, Muse, Biffy Clyro) is already a fan. So much so that he created the album cover. A happy accident meant that Kscope’s designer met Storm at an exhibition and asked if he’d work with a band with big ideas but who had yet to make their mark on the world. If, conceded the artist, I like their music.

“He sat us down and asked exactly what the songs were about,” says Soord about Storm, “Then he gave us six sketch ideas, but the one we wanted couldn’t be done as it meant digging a huge hole in a field, but no farmer would let us do it, but I prefer this one, even though Storm’s against putting bands on the cover he even let me be on it. Not that you’ll recognise me.”

With festivals and a full tour planned for later in the year and the best album of their careers under their belt, The Pineapple Thief are taking things as they’ve always done; slowly. Which is why it’ll come as even more of a surprise when they steal your heart away.
